Brogue Saxophone Quartet, Elliott Chorale; Kiera Galway, director

University Chapel, Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB

This project is an exciting collaboration between the Elliott Chorale (Mount Allison’s auditioned choral ensemble directed by Kiera Galway) and the Brogue Saxophone Quartet (James Kalyn, Tristan DeBorba, Brad Reid, Catherine Hatt). The Fifth Century, a work scored for saxophone quartet and choir by British composer Gavin Bryars, premiered in 2014 to great acclaim. The eponymous studio album featuring choir The Crossing, quartet PRISM and conductor Donald Nally won a Grammy for Best Choral Performance in 2018. The work is haunting, with long sustained passages setting the evocative texts of 17th century poet Thomas Traherne. The composer describes the work as having “an intense spirituality, celebrating the glory of creation”.
